Spartan starts recycling at Kappa Alpha Theta

GM has long been committed to a culture of environmental responsibility. At the heart of that commitment are employees who understand their role in making a difference.

Russ Brewster is a GM employee, and when his daughter Haley started bringing recycling home from her sorority house at Michigan State University, he pointed her in the direction of an in-house recycling effort. He put Haley in touch with an environmental engineer at the Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Mich., home of the Cadillac, and together they came up with a plan to get the women of Kappa Alpha Theta into recycling.

An outstanding and honorable effort. Congratulations. However, I’m amazed that MSU’s Sorority and Fraternity houses weren’t already participating it the huge campus recycling effort that has been in place for many years at MSU. MSU has one of the largest and recognized recycling efforts on campus of any university in the entire United States. I would have thought MSU would have had all of their Sorority and Fraternity houses already incorporated into that extensive campus recycling system.

Carl – You are correct about the recycling programs at MSU. Haley even commented on how it was a big transition to go from a home that recycled, to a dorm that recycled, to a sorority house that doesn’t recycle. I think the issue is that the fraternities and sororities are not official parts of the university and thus don’t follow the same operations as university-owned facilities.
